Abstract

Objectives: This study was performed to find the prevalence of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and the relationship between PMS and various factors among highschool girls.

Methods: The subject of this study was 461 high school girls in Seoul, who filled out the questionnaire composed of general characteristics, Psychosocial Well-bing Index (PWI) for stress, and short formed Premenstural Assessment form (PAF) and etc. The prevalence rate was calculated by definition of case, and the relationship between PMS and various factors were examined by chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analysis.

Results: The prevalence rate of PMS was 5.9%, and the symptoms experienced by most subjects as severe or extreme were feeling under stress, irritability, depression. abdominal pain and bloating. As a results of univariate analysis, the related factors were regularity of menstruation, alcohol drinking, smoking, stress and amounts of daily fluid intake. And the related factors with PMS by multiple logistic regression analysis were intake of monthly pain killer, stress and amounts of daily fluid intake.

Conclusions: The related factors with PMS are intake of monthly pain killer, stress and amounts of fluid intake among high school girls in this study. It is important to prepare effective strategies to control PMS of high school girls and further study will be need for different age groups.
